A tablet PC is similar to a regular laptop in many ways. For example, it uses the same basic software (Windows) so the learning curve is not so great.
There are really two types of Tablets: the slate and convertible. The slate does not have a keyboard or a mouse for input. Enter everything with a pen. The convertible has some kind of mouse and keyboard input. You can also rotate the screen and sitting on the keyboard. Then you can write on the screen with a model of slate.
Both models work very well, but the convertible is much more popular, probably because people has not purchased in the pen 100% as an input device. They want that the keyboard as a backup.
But this is a mistake. The pen works very well and is a great way for people to interact with your Tablet PC. You can write directly on the screen with the pen and then the software become the writing hand text. You can then dump this text in the relevant programmes, such as Microsoft Word and others.
It is true that it might not be able to write as fast as writes, but that is the good thing about Tablet PCs. You have the best of both worlds. With a convertible Tablet PC, just rotate the screen and pull. It can then use the keyboard to write with. If you have a keyboard slate, can write to a USB keyboard or wireless.
Also you can draw diagrams and pictures directly to your computer. This is especially useful if you're a student, because you don't have to write your notes and try to draw the diagrams with the mouse or scribbling, sketching in a notebook.
From the diagrams and notes are on your computer, you can also immediately backup so not to lose them if your computer fails. Most of the schools has the campus wireless network, so can backup it off-site. Just ask your school of the Department of how do, and can probably guide you through it.
So the tablet PC are the future of portable computing. Get all the advantages of a laptop with some additional functionality which is very useful.
However, there are some drawbacks. For example, they are more expensive than laptops for the most part. But this do work as more people buy them. Only you can decide if it is worth spending the extra trouble.
