Busy? Here's How a Portable Tablet PC Can Make Your Life Easier

Are tablet PCs just glorified games consoles? Or smartphones that have been eating their veggies? Well, no... on both counts. Let's look at just four ways in which portable tablet devices are in a class of their own and can really be worth the investment.

1. Get the Latest News and Updates While You're On the Go

If you read a national newspaper, a local newspaper, subscribe to a few blogs and have a couple of other favourite sites which update their content regularly, a table PC is ideal for staying up to date. They're actually portable in a way that laptops and netbooks have always hoped to be, and it's therefore quite easy to check the headlines or see if your favourite blog's RSS feed has been updated while waiting in line at the supermarket or on the train or sitting in the park.

2. Stay Connected While You're Out of the Office

Similar to the first point, you can stay connected while you're out and about. Yes, you can check email on your smartphone, but can you log into every cloud-based application you need for your job and access the same functionality? Maybe, maybe not. And even if you can, the interface is so much better on a tablet.

Almost all tablet PCs come with wi-fi as a standard, built-in feature and there are many models with full 3G or 4G connectivity, allowing you to access the mobile data network almost anywhere (well, within reason, of course!) This is one of the reasons tablet devices are being used by businesspeople more and more.

3. Use the "Dead-Time" to Get Some Extra Work Done

Following on from the previous point, tablets are a great way to get work done while you're on the road. I've always found laptops a bit too bulky to do much work at a coffee shop or on a plane. And it's always so much of a chore to get it out, set it up, etc. that I usually don't!

Tablets have removed that excuse. They're light and small and easily carried around. You can take your tablet out of your bag and be working in just a few minutes with very minimal fuss no matter where you are. And with some tablet devices boasting battery life of up to 10 hours, you can get quite a lot of work done on a long flight or train journey.

Also, you can easily upload the dozens of reports, journal articles, and whitepapers you haven't had time to read yet. Reading them on your smartphone is possible, but even with the largest screen, it's a bit of a strain to read a 40-page pdf. Doing it on your tablet and taking notes at the same time is a much better way to go.

4. Have Some Fun!

As we've discussed, tablet PCs are definitely more than oversized Nintendos and should be taken seriously as a productivity-boosting piece of technology. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't take advantage of all the cool entertainment options! You can play games, watch streaming movies, chat with friends, download music, you name it.

Fill the Gap

Sure, you can do all the things mentioned in this article with a desktop computer or laptop or, in some cases, even a smartphone. The point isn't that a portable tablet PC is the only device on which you can do these things. Instead, I hope you can see how convenient tablets are and how they perfectly fill the gap between what you can't do with a smartphone and what's too cumbersome with a laptop.
