Android Tablets: Are Tablets The End For Traditional Laptop PCs?

Bookmark and Share

Android tablets are a new and very special type of computer. Instead of taking the traditional form of screen, keyboard and mouse, they are one large flat screen tablet PC with all of the hardware built in behind it and no peripherals! Android OS is the latest operating system from Google, and it is made to connect you to the internet and make it easy to watch videos and listen to music.

Android tablets are now a very large risk to laptop PCs, but they are so similar, so how can this be? In fact they are not as similar as you may think, so let's look at the two devices in more detail in order to uncover why:

Laptop PCs are the traditional portable computer that are usually in the form of a notebook. They have a reasonably large keyboard and touchpad. They commonly have other features such as DVD drive, large HDD and a lot of memory. Due to this high level of hardware they use a lot of power and so also require a large battery. Their power makes them rather power hungry, so despite having a large heavy battery you should still expect perhaps only 3 to 4 hours of life from one charge.

What you lose in portability and weight, you do gain somewhat in raw processing power, as many modern laptops have the power to effortlessly multi-task many memory-hogging programs and the keyboard makes typing a breeze.

So are laptop PCs that portable? They are OK, but perhaps quite heavy for girls to carry for a long time and also not suitable to be used for a long time unless you're near a power supply.

A tablet PC is a lot less complex than a laptop because as mentioned they fit everything into one slate-like body. They have a virtual keypad and mouse, which work simply by tapping the right key displayed on the screen of the icon that you want to activate.

They generally have a pretty small storage capacity and dispense with extra weighty peripherals like DVD drives, therefore they are not so power hungry and can cope with a much smaller battery and still come away with an average battery life of between 5 up to even 10 hours!

An Android tablet is certainly threatens laptop PCs because it allows you to do so many of the same activities that you used to need a laptop for, but in a much lighter, more portable and longer-lasting package.

In fact they have really cornered the market for people who previously used their laptop mainly for recreational purposes such as reading eBooks, listening to music, watching movies and browsing the web.

The only area where laptops are still on top is for work, where tablets just can't currently compete with their power. But with tablet sales set to pass those of laptops by 2012 according to Forrester research, you have to wonder when they will make them completely obsolete!

If the web at your fingertips any time, any place appeals to you then you can help contribute to the downfall of laptops now! But before you rush out to your local store to buy one, stop and consider buying a tablet on the net because here you'll find the cheapest prices and could save hundreds of dollars!
