Apple introduced its iPad in stores a few days back. Though expected to bring cheers to the tablet PC market, it didn't' have anything more to offer than the other products already available in the market.

Now, let's trace the long lineage of Tablets. From the earliest concept sketches and input devices to the most recent hybrid models, let's now explore the winding, long and interesting history of this computer.

Tablet Conceptualization

It was around the sixties when computers became more powerful and smaller when the idea of PCs slowly started gathering steam. Nevertheless, before any average consumer welcomed computer into their home, an easy to understand and intuitive interface was necessary. And this wasn't going to get cut through flashing switches and punch cards.

Around this time, science fiction offered a glimpse of the future where computers were handheld and portable with touch screen interfaces and full color displays. It didn't take time before engineers tackled the issue of making the fictional devices a reality. Nevertheless, before full fledged tablet PCs become a reality, engineers constructed a tabular based input system.

Tablet in Sixties

In the sixties, two such tablet interfaces appeared - the Rand tablet and the Sylator. Both permitted handwriting recognition using specialized pens and electronic tablet slate. It was not until 1985 that Penpad computer shortly introduced its new version of tablet PC. Though not portable by any means, this computer began swapping the keyboard out for a touch based system that would recognize handwriting and limited gestures.

And with graphical user interfaces still in nascent stages, Penpad usually depended on MS Dos operating system, which is certainly crude by modern standards. Nevertheless, it paved the way for an altogether new generation of tablet device.
